Most PE lessons can’t record learners’ performance. How then are learners meant to improve areas of physical weakness? We chatted with sports teacher, Leigh Norton from St Declan’s School for Boys, who recently appointed Fielding Dreams to help with their PE curriculum. Their system, Amaven, could change the way your school does PE lessons forever.
Q1: How did you run PE and track learners’ physical growth before using Amaven?
We simply used to run the Physical Education system directly off of the CAPS or TAPS documents, or straight out of the learners’ textbooks. The activities laid out for teachers to do with their students, however, were not very specific to the objectives that the learner had to achieve in each term of the year. More than that, the teachers struggled to understand practically how the activities mentioned were to be done by the learners.
Q2: Why did you choose Amaven?
We chose Amaven because it provided us with a more involved and dynamic way to teach PE. Our old way of teaching PE did not provide us with an in-depth analysis of each child’s unique physical attributes. Amaven’s system not only provides this, but also recommended lessons to address specific areas that need improvement (e.g. flexibility or strength). The teacher watches a video-lesson which provides clear instructions concerning each activity. This enables them to relay the information to the children confidently and accurately.
Q3: What has been the benefit of using Amaven?
The biggest benefit of Amaven would be the wide variety of lesson plans that include clear learner assessment criteria. The lesson plans are detailed, and are suitable for not only the outdoors but are applicable to all kinds of weather.
Amaven is also very beneficial as it covers many age groups throughout our school: from Grade RR, right through primary school and high school. Keeping up with admin on Amaven is also much more efficient and less tedious in comparison to using the CAPS or TAPS documents or learner textbooks.
Q4: What do the learners and parents think about Amaven?
We have received many positive comments about the system. Many parents that were not familiar with new and technically advanced systems, such as Amaven, have accepted it with ease. Once our school has grown, we will be allowing parents to log into their own child’s PE portal on Amaven so that they can use the system at home to improve their child’s Physical Education.
Q5: Would you recommend Fielding Dreams to other schools?
I would recommend Amaven to any school across the nation as it is very user-friendly and more dynamic than just teaching PE out of a textbook or learner guide. We can confidently say that the system is successful and will make Physical Education a lot more fun for the learners and a pleasure for teachers to teach the subject. The staff of Fielding Dreams have been very hands-on and have always been available to assist us, which has made the transition a lot smoother.
