We spoke to Dirk Mellema, Director of IT Innovation & Administration at St Patrick’s College to hear how Wonde has improved their user management.

About St Patrick’s College

Set on a 30-hectare campus near Mount Currie Nature Reserve, St Patrick’s College is an independent school educating learners from 4 months to Matric.

Additionally, the college celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2023 and is a proud member of ISASA and the IEB.

The Strain of Manual User and Data Management

Like many schools, St Patrick’s relies on Microsoft and Google domains for communication and learning. However, as both the sole IT staff member and a full-time teacher, Dirk faced a big challenges:

  • Creating and removing user accounts.
  • Migrating learners to their new grades each year.
  • Configuring new team groups and devices.

However, this work was especially heavy at the start of each school year and took up valuable teaching and preparation time.

For Dirk, Wonde has already delivered significant improvements by freeing up their only IT staff member to focus more on teaching and less on admin.

Additionally with MyLogin Lite soon fully implemented, technology access will become even more seamless for learners. As a result long manual work became automated and supported through the platform.

With around 800 devices on campus, Rhenish Primary in Stellenbosch needed protection from digital threats. They turned to SonicWall for a school cybersecurity strategy that could secure their school from harm.

School Cybersecurity Needs 

Before SonicWall, Rhenish Primary relied on the ISP firewall offsite.  

“This was not nearly comprehensive enough,” Gary stated. 

It didn’t work when Rhenish adopted blended learning and introduced the B.Y.O.D (Bring Your Own Device) to school policy. Their school cybersecurity needed to include:

  1. Stronger protection against online threats 
  2. Better control of bandwidth usage throughout the school

  • Content filtering (both http and https),
  • Gateway AV
  • Anti-Spyware and Intrusion Prevention
